Horticulture and gardening encompass a wide range of activities, offering a number of diverse, exciting careers. These include:
- Garden or landscape design
- Garden maintenance and planting
- Arboriculture
- Working in a nursery: growing, selling, and management
- Floral design
- Sports turf management
- Amenity management
- Agriculture
- Garden sitting service (i.e. maintaining gardens while the owners are on holiday)
- Teach adult classes on gardening and garden design, or herbal gardens, etc.
- Providing garden therapy in nursing homes
- Growing and selling container plants or house plants
- Travelling in search of rare and unusual plants
- Commercial greenhouse growing.
advantages and disadvantages of a career in horticulture
Advantages
- You get to work outside in an attractive environment.
- Many of the jobs are self-employed, so you get to be your own boss.
Disadvantages
- It’s seasonal. If you’re self-employed, your earnings can drop in the winter if you don’t find complementary ways to boost your income.
- Working in horticulture may be hard physical work, and as you get older you may want to switch into related areas such as garden design. It can also be difficult working out of doors in the winter.
